Good Samaritan Law
Good Samaritan laws exist in all 50 states and are designed to protect individuals who stop to provide care to someone who is ill or injured from civil liability. These laws generally apply when assistance is given voluntarily, without payment or the expectation of compensation or gifts.
If a person is unresponsive, “implied consent” is assumed, meaning you may provide CPR and care within the scope of your training and knowledge. If the individual is responsive and coherent, you should always ask for verbal consent before providing assistance.
In any emergency situation, you should call 911 as soon as possible.
